The Auditor's Report
The gatekeeper of trust.
Before any number matters, an independent auditor checks whether the financial statements are prepared correctly and give a true and fair view. The auditor's report is their verdict. It's short, but every word is chosen carefully, and professionals read it first. What the report contains Opinion paragraph The headline verdict, clean, qualified, adverse, or disclaimer (next chapter). Basis for opinion Why they reached that verdict; any issues are named here. Key audit matters The areas that required the most judgment, a map of where risk lives. Emphasis of matter A flag drawing attention to something (e.g. going-concern doubt) without changing the opinion. Responsibilities Standard text on management's and the auditor's roles. 'Key audit matters' are a gift to the analyst: the auditor is telling you exactly which numbers involved the most estimation and risk. Start your own scrutiny there. Note who the auditor is and whether they change often. Frequent, unexplained auditor changes can be a warning sign worth investigating.
